Pasquotank and surrounding counties saw numerous raids and burnings during January 1863. T.J. Bland’s store in Chowan County was a location of constant theft. It was robbed and “2000 dollars worth of goods” was stolen. According to tradition, the local Buffaloes found the missing merchandise in a house next to the store and claimed that citizens of the town were committing the robberies.
