Henry Hunter Bowen was born in the Long Acre Community of Washington County, North Carolina in 1823. He married Nancy "Ann" Latham Boyd in December of 1848.  Henry was 41 years old when he joined the Confederate States Marine Corps. He was sent to Camp Holmes outside of Raleigh, North Carolina in October 1864 and then later transferred to Charleston, South Carolina as a Marine recruit aboard the Indian Chief, a receiving ship for the CSS Columbia.  Henry and Ann often wrote each other on topics such as how to handle the crops and livestock and the news of events occurring in nearby Plymouth, North Carolina.  Henry surrendered at Appomattox in 1865 and returned home to his life as a farmer.  Ann died in 1903 and Henry followed in 1907. They had 8 children during their marriage of over 50 years.
