George
Washington Lassiter was
born on March 19, 1841 in Chowan
County, North
Carolina and died October 28, 1922 in Chowan
County.
He is buried in the Cannon Ferry section of Chowan
County. George
enlisted into the Confederate Army on February 15, 1862 in Chowan
County
as a private. On March 31, 1862 he mustered
into Company F, 11th North
Carolina Infantry. George saw action the battles of White Hall, NC in 1862; Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania in
1863; Falling Waters, Virginia
in 1863; Spotsylvania
Court House,
Virginia
in 1864, and the siege and fall of Petersburg
in 1865. He was taken prisoner on April 02, 1865 at Petersburg,
Virginia and
confined to Fort
Delaware, Delaware
where he took the oath of allegiance June 19, 1865.
He returned home to his civilian life as a farmer.
