Samuel Forbes Leary was born on January 27, 1842 in Camden County. He joined the United States Navy during the Civil War, where he saw service on board the USS Brandywine and the USS Commodore Perry in Company A, 1st North Carolina Regiment. He survived the war and lived until 1924, when he died in Camden County, North Carolina.
