Josiah Dunlow grew up in a small family of yeoman farmers in Bertie County. He enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 22 on August 7, 1862, and was mustered into Company C, 1st North Carolina Infantry. Like several of his deserting relatives, including Marcus Johnson and Smallwood Johnson, Dunlow was tried for his absence from the regiment from September until November 1862. He survived the war and lived in Bertie with his wife, Nancy White, and their 13 children. He continued his friendship with Marcus Johnson until he died in 1906.
