Joseph B. Cherry served as 1st Lieutenant on the Field and Staff of the 8th Regiment North Carolina Troops, but resigned that position when he was appointed captain of Company F, 59th Regiment. On April 1, 1865, he was admitted to the hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, with a gunshot wound and died the same day.
