Edmund Crey Brabble was born in Currituck County on January 5, 1835. A bright student, he graduated as valedictorian from Dartmouth College in 1857. He taught for some time in South Carolina and practiced law in Tyrrell County, North Carolina before the war. He enlisted in Confederate service on May 16, 1861, as a captain of infantry in Company L, 12th North Carolina Infantry. He was transferred to the 32nd North Carolina Infantry on October 15th of that year and rose to major the next month. On March 17, 1862, Brabble became commander of that division and commanded his troops at Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, and Spotsylvania Court House where he was killed on May 10, 1864.
