William Crawford Dawson was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on August 31, 1831. Growing up, he attended local schools and became the first photographer in Elizabeth City. In the war, he served with the "State Guards," a unit that eventually became Company L, 17th North Carolina Regiment. The regiment fought at the Battle of Roanoke Island in February 7–8, 1862. When the flag bearer was killed, Dawson seized the colors and was cited later for his gallantry. Dawson went on to marry Nannie White on January 4, 1865 and died on March 28, 1879. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City.
