John Robert Langston was born in Nansemond County, Virginia and lived in Gates County before the war. According to the 1860 census, John's father Thomas, was a farmer with assets over $8000. He was a student at Reynoldson Institute (Academy) before enlisting in the Confederate Army at the age of 20 on June 12, 1861 in Halifax County. According to his enlistment papers, John joined Company B, 5th North Carolina Infantry. He was accounted for until May 5, 1862, when he was killed in Williamsburg, Virginia.
