Battle of Fort Clark

Featured Artifacts – 1861-1862


Coastal battles in the region included those at Forts Clark and Hatteras and at Roanoke Island in present day current Dare County. Both resulted in Union victories.

The following artifacts were excavated from an archaeological dig at Fort Clark:

COIN, 1851
U.S. minted one cent

BUTTON, Stamped Oval
Sleeve or collar button common to the first half of the 19th century.




TIP, Brass Bayonet Scabbard
Socket-type scabbard for a triangular blade bayonet commonly used by both Union and Confederate troops with Models 1836, 1855, 1861, and 1863 rifle muskets.
